![]() What really struck me about Elite: Dangerous was the sheer attention to detail in the cockpit view. And so, after a 20 year break, the Elite franchise lives again-and if my time in the beta is any indication the intervening time has been put to damn good use. Then came Kickstarter, and the space sim didn’t seem so dead after all. Two sequels were made in the 90s, but the franchise was presumed lost in space genre died out in the early 00s (save for a small number of modest games like the X series). Originally developed by Braben and a partner in 1984, Elite essentially created the space trading sim genre out of whole cloth-and revolutionized 3D graphics at the same time. That was the first time I died playing Elite: Dangerous, and it was unlike anything I’ve ever experienced.Įlite: Dangerous is the latest entry in a franchise dating back to the mid-80s, all under the helm of one man: David Braben. ![]() “You can make it,” I told myself as I rerouted every kilojoule of power to my ship’s engines. I’d grown more aggressive than my skills could warrant-tried to take on a bigger faster ship that had mauled me before I’d managed to spool up my faster-than-light jumpdrive and escape. I could see it through the shattered remains of my cockpit’s canopy, beyond the timer ticking down the seconds I had left to live.Ī mere 5 kilometers ahead and full of life-giving air. Murder is a part of pirating then as it sadly is now, we only need to look at some of the terrible things that have happened off the coast of Somalia a few years ago.The station was just there. It is the book that Robert Louis Stevenson used when writing of Treasure Island (my favourite book as a child). There is an excellent book called Pirates by Charles Johnson from 1724 that is still in print that details the exploits of pirates and it is full of murder, rape and other brutalities. While not every pirate throughout history has been a blood thirsty killer it is well documented that a lot of them were. Pirates also didn't want to be such a threat that navies were mobilized against them, but rather left at a 'if we come across them we'll chase them but otherwise, meh' kind of thing. In most cases however I would still argue that this course of action will dissuade most attackers from pursuit and would add that not hanging around for a real long time and/or high waking out of the system are your 100% methods for surviving after emergency dropping if you don't feel confident.Īctually pirates were very careful to cultivate reputations of mercy for those that comply with them people who knew they were going to be killed were more likely to destroy their cargo and fight more ferociously rather than cooperate with their aggressors. I have not had this happen personally and have not tested this extensively with other players. EMERGENCY DROP.Įdit: As some people in the comments have noted it seems people could potentially jump into your low wake and appear next to you regardless of boosting away. You do lose about 1-2% hull with this method but that is always less than a rebuy.Īgain the prime lessons I see most people do not understand about avoiding unwanted combat are:Īlways check the 2nd tab of the social panel for human players in a system as it is far more useful than the contacts panel.Įmergency Drop. Again always be ready to immediately mash FSD drop again if needed. Now boost in one direction and wait 1-2 minutes and jump back out. If it looks like that hollow triangle is starting to try and get behind you simply double press your frameshift drive button and you will immediately drop out of SC and it will take the pirate or killer a decent while to jump into your wake because that process takes forever. If you see a dangerous ship (ie: FDL, Clipper, Cutter, Corvette, Python, Anaconda, or anything else that can wield guns and go sorta fast) then select them in the contacts panel so you can watch them and their vector on your approach. This panel will tell you if there are any human players in the system you are in and what type of ship they are in. Instead of checking contacts when entering a system you should be bringing up the social panel and always be checking the second tab to the right. (Note: this doesn't really work on NPCs as they will jump instantly into your wake because they are dirty cheaters.)
